Joe Satri-Yoda

I Thought I would start off my topic with kind of a musical mentour of mine Joe Satriani. This guys guitar playing is what inspired me to want to play music and pick up the guitar. This guitar player among countless other musicians has had a major impact on people and inspires them to become great at an instrument. Joe in particular from reading and learning more about him has had quite the impact on other guitar players. To me he is like the Yoda of guitar players in that he has personally taught many great guitarist in his life as a teacher before he was even known. Some notable names are Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett from Metallica, Larry Lalonde from Primus, David Bryson from Counting Crows, and even Nigel Tufnel from Spinal Tap. Anyway, I would like to know what are some of the interests of others reading this and who inspired them to get into the things they enjoy practicing and enjoy doing.

Recent Thought: I think the next Satriani Concert I go to I will be bringing with me a big Joe Satri-Yoda sign.

any reference to yoda is good in my book, age. i started playing guitar because of slash. while i realize satriani is quite a bit more talented, i still think that having a single name that is also an action verb is pretty cool.

didn't satriani used to play with frank zappa and the mothers of invention? or is that steve vai? or both?

I'm not a guitarist, but my favorite all-around is Hendrix. After that, probably Eric Clapton and Eric Johnson.

With guitar, it's not necessarily a matter of good vs. better, but just different styles. I learned to play guitar by getting a music book with every Beatles song and just played it for the better part of 1 year, so I think that everyone but Ringo was pretty ingenius. You've got to love "Blackbird." Not tough to play, but can you write something that great? I hope so.

Joe Satriani picked up the guitar because of Hendrix. When Hendrix died the first thing Joe did was quit his football team in highschool and started working on his guitar skills.

I haven't listened to too much of the beatles for lyrical content besides the ones like "All you need is love." and "Yesterday" and others, but do you know what they are refering to with the "Blackbird." I haven't really listened to that one too much. It's no doubt a great one though.

It was Frank and Vai. Vai actually would note for note transcribe for Zappa as a job and that's how they met. Vai was like 19 yrs old and Freekishly good.

That's like a record, 3 comments posted in a row on your own blog. Freakishless...

My motivation to learn guitar wasn't Hendrix, Zappa, Slash, or Phil Collen (of Def Leppard fame) - it was the Edge & Neil Finn of Crowded House, coupled with a desperate need for some sort of worship at youth group.

Thanks Age for a stellar 1st post. You may want to turn on "word verification" to avoid the inevitable ad-spam that circulates on the blogs.

ummm, i don't play guitar attempted once and failed miserably cause my fingers are too short. would like to pick it up again maybe someday
but...singing came from my mom's love for karen carpenter. i used to practice as a lil girl trying to sound just like her. scary huh?? then of course as i got older i wanted to sound like whitney houston for a while went through and ethnic thang there and then on i went to celine and mariah. now musically i know thier songs are much to be desired but vocally they are ones that have inspired me. oh yeah, and i learned how to hear harmonies from the dixie chicks.
so glad to hear more from you age.

I listened to Paul McCartney talk about Blackbird. It was inspired by the segregated south. Blackbird referred to a black girl. There was more to the story, but I forget.

The Beatles were urging black people to arise and revolt against the white establishment...at least according to Charles Manson.

I wanna play guitar like Dave Matthews or Bob Marley...and as far as drumming goes...I like Buddy Rich or Carter Beauford (DMB)...and since I'm gonna play the bass soon, I'll start listening to Victor Wooten...those are my musical inspirations

I'm not a big wooten fan. For solo stuff I like Stu Hamm, watching him play Quahog's Anyone got me hooked on Bass. For 'progressive rock' I'm a huge John Myung fan.
